Liz & Julian’s nature-inspired invitations

Elizabeth and Julian first came to us almost 2 years ago (gosh! where does the time go!?) in search of some beautiful custom letterpress stationery for their June, 2011 wedding. A few phone consultations later (they live and work in NYC), and I felt like we were old friends; I loved hearing about Julian’s work in the wine industry and was (and am!) totally fascinated by Liz’s nutrition and holistic health business (learn all about it on her website, Dishing Well).

Liz & Julian were getting married on Martha’s Vineyard and were looking for stationery that gave nod to the island’s incredible natural beauty as well as their passion for local flowers and food. We opted for a playful, illustrated map of the island for their save the dates and you can see and read all about those on the Oh So Beautiful Paper blog.

For the invitation we wanted to keep things a touch more elegant. Using a rich palette of mossy green, plum purple and a deep raspberry, we mixed classic fonts, gorgeous hand calligraphy by Elizabeth Porcher Jones and lush botanical graphics for a nature-inspired and romantic look. Deep purple edge painting, some subtle blind printed pattern on the reply cards and colored backing papers for the festivities insert added pops of visual interest, as well. All the pieces of the invitation were bundled together by a layered belly band that was comprised of blind-printed cotton, burlap fabric and cotton twine with a flat-printed hang tag.  Each tag featured art from a variety of vintage seed packets as reference to the foodie couple. The little bundle perfectly set the tone for their gorgeous summer fete and we were thrilled to create many coordinating day-of pieces to keep the design cohesive.

Why book an appointment for wedding stationery?

Over the years, we’ve had a number of people wonder why we ask that brides and grooms book appointments to discuss wedding stationery. So, today, I’d love to give you a brief answer to that all-important and understandable question. In a nutshell, we schedule appointments for these 3 main reasons:

A scheduled appointment means one-on-one time and undivided attention for you! Choosing and designing wedding stationery is a fun process, but it can be confusing (especially when you can customize as much as you can with our albums or personal design!). A private appointment with one of our invitation experts means that you’ll get the dedicated service, thorough explanations, and professional creative collaboration that you deserve. We’ll be able to devote our attention to you and you only and help you navigate the ins and outs of stationery. From printing techniques and price points to creative inspiration and etiquette, we’ll be able to answer all your questions, point you in the right directions and give you solid, sound advice.

Scheduled appointments prevent walk-in disappointment. What we mean is that, this time of year, we are chock-a-block booked with appointments. We absolutely hate turning down walk-ins who want to look at albums, but we must in order to provide an exceptional experience to those people who have booked private appointments. We would never want you to make the trip to see us only to find that you are unable to browse because we have appointments booked all day utilizing our cozy invitation corner. And, conversely, we would never compromise your scheduled appointment by allowing walk-in customers to interrupt your dedicated time.

Appointments give us the time to get to you know YOU! By blocking off 1.5-2 hour slots for each of our initial consultations, we are able to take the time to truly get to know you, your love story and your vision for your big day. We are hopeless romantics, after all. So, hearing the proposal story, learning about how you met and truly getting to know you is what we love most about our jobs. We’ll pour you some champagne and then settle in to chat about all the lovely details of your big day!

Really, appointments are set-up to benefit you. Our appointments are a relaxed and informative way for us to help you understand, select and customize the perfect stationery to fit your vision and budget!

This time of year is our busy season (with lots of couples planning for Spring and Summer weddings), so please do plan ahead when you would like to schedule an appointment.  We offer appointments 6 days a week and do our absolute best to work with the busiest of schedules. Weekend appointments book up first, so be sure to call a few weeks ahead of when you’d like to come in.  We can’t wait to meet with you!

Designer Spotlight: Printerette Press!

I am just beyond excited to finally tell y’all about one of our newest albums: Printerette Press. When Whitney and I discovered Printerette Press at the National Stationery Show this past May, we squealed out loud in her booth as we poured through her album.  For reals, friends, this album is LEGIT.

I’m totally ga-ga over just about everything that designer Catherine Polacek has put together for this gorgeous line.  The work is all beautifully printed by hand on her 100 year old press in St. Paul, MN, but it’s her whimsical design and illustration that really spoke to me.  We had been looking for a hand-illustrated line to add to our collection of invitation albums and all the pretty in the Printerette book just took my breath away.

I did a serious happy dance when I came upon her Lake of the Woods suite (immediately below) and her Redwood suite (2nd suite below).  Each illustration is done by hand and can be totally customized for your event/venue/whims. We’ve already had a couple customize one of these with illustrations of the camp where they’ll be married next month.  It was mucho adorbs.

And, as if custom illustration on your invitations is SUPER RAD enough, Printerette went ahead and added watercolor detailing (digitally printed) to some of her letterpress designs. Watercolor + beautiful printing + totally fresh design = Awesomesauce.  Check out a few of the Printerette designs below and then schedule an appointment to come in and swoon over this album in person.  You will fall in love (all over again).

Designer Spotlight: MaeMae Paperie

I have been wanting to write this post for weeks now and I’ve just finally had the time to give it the attention that it deserves. Paper hounds, I am so SO very excited to introduce to you all one of our newest albums of invitations: MaeMae Paperie!!

MaeMae Paperie is the brainchild of the incredibly talented Megan Gonzalez. Whitney and I have been huge fans of Megan’s work for some time now. We’ve been following her blog and oohing and aaahing over her custom designs and were just GIDDY when she finally announced that she’d be putting out an album. Dream come true!!

A little background about the name & logo: MaeMae means “little sister” in Chinese and has been Megan’s nickname for years and years (given to her lovingly by her little brothers).  And, the pony in her logo is a nod to her childhood stuffed toy and bestie (see below for evidence). Ponies + adorable nickname + stellar design = obvi I’m in love. Really, she had me at the pony.

(Hi baby Megan!  Hi today-Megan! You guys are adorbs! So is your pony!)

The collection that Megan has put together in this album is truly incredible.  Her sense of pattern, color, typesetting and whimsy combine to create pure magic and I’ve been spending lots of free moments just pouring over her designs.  Customizing is definitely a passion of hers and you can tell; each suite is designed to encourage mixing and matching and customizing the package to create your perfect vision. I really dig that she offers fun embellishments, too, like custom rubber stamps so you can DIY envelopes and wax seals.  And that’s on top of all the incredible colors, fonts, patterns and illustrations that you can mix and match to craft the pieces. All suites are available in flat or letterpress printing and you can even add some foil stamping magic for that extra shine!

Did I mention that she’s offering a promotion, too?  Woo hoo!!  Check it:

You really have to see this album in person to understand its total genius, but here’s a bit of eye candy to hold you over until you get your tail into the shop.

Pretty amazing, right?  We think so!  Call or email us for an appointment to come see the pretty for yourself.
